Using your FSA/HSA for Beauty

I’m always on a hunt to find how I can maximize my health insurance. Turns out, if you have a FSA/HSA account you can use it in the beauty aisle for select items.  It’s one way to save on my beauty needs because they do add up.

Any products labeled as FSA/HSA eligible can be purchased using your FSA or HSA account. Usually when shopping for eligible items, depending on the store or website you can request a reimbursement or just use your health savings card. I have found that, in stores like Sephora, and Ulta you will need to submit a request for reimbursement rather than using your card in the stores or on their website.  Sites like CVS, and Amazon have specific sections you can shop from that filter the products that are eligible for the benefits

Steps to make sure your makeup products are

FSA/HSA Approved

1. Skin-related Related issues

Eczema, psoriasis, acne, and warts all fall under medically approved products that can ge used with your health card. If you any of these conditions, you are eligible to get lotions and makeup products like face wash, toner, lotion, and other products. Any words emphasizing eczema, skin protection, SPF, and acne should be placed in your submitting title when submitting for reimbursement.

2. SPF is in the Product

Health companies consider protection of skin with sunscreen to be a health benefit and consider products with SPF over 30 to be eligible items. If the product has SPF over 30, it qualifies under FSA/HSA. . So, your favorite foundation, lip balm, or sunscreen can fall under the eligible list.

3. Reimbursement is your Friend, Keep your receipt.

If you are shopping at beauty brand stores like ULTA and Sephora, you will need to pay with a debit card or credit card then submit for reimbursement. Unless you are shopping in Walgreens, CVS, or Amazon under FSA label items, your FSA card will not automatically be approved. Keep your receipt so that you can request a reimbursement from your health account. Also, some stores will provide an itemized list to help with proof of submitting for your health savings account.

4. Check the Eligibility List

Verify the eligibility of products with your FSA or HSA provider before making any purchases. A list of eligible items is frequently available on the website of your provider, or you may ask customer support agents for help. This
