Productive Work Travel Tips
For many of us, work travel is a fact of life, but it can also feel like a huge drain on our time. Between the actual travel time, meetings, and trying to fit in some personal time, it can feel like there are just not enough hours in the day. What I have found is with the right strategies in place, work travel can actually be a time to be productive and rejuvenate
I know when I have to travel for work. I treat the time away from the office as a mini vacation on the company’s dime.
At my previous job, I had to travel for work often, which required me to travel out of the state. Most people hated it, which I understood if you have kids, a family, or a dog at home. It can cause a lot of inconveniences. However, for me, I saw it as mini vacation pay by my company. I was not paying out of pocket for the flight, car rental, or hotel. So I was happy to see a new place, even if it was just for 24 hours.
Plan Ahead
When it comes to my travel essentials, since it’s a short trip, maybe 24 hours or less than three days. I usually take carry-on luggage that can fit overhead or under my seat. It’s also a key travel hack for me since I hate waiting or paying for language work. Checking bags is a delay that you don’t need, especially when you are short on time.
Pack Smart
Make sure you have a game plan before getting to your destination. Before leaving, I make sure I have most of the materials from any meeting and an extra pair of items for last-minute things if I have time. For example, if I have time to head to a beach I will pack my swimwear just in case I have time or items that I can easily convert from day to night wear
Arrival Early and Leave Late
Make sure I plan my meeting and flight early so I can be done early and have the rest of the day for personal time.
Rewards Points
If possible, when booking accommodation, I would personally book my hotel, such as the Hilton, since I was a rewards member and would get the points, although my job was paying for it. Also, the same thing applies to car rentals and flights. I would make sure I could confirm that the bookings had rewards programs.
Finally
Make sure you have a good mix of work and play. This can mean exploring the city you're visiting, trying new foods, or just taking some time to relax and recharge.
In conclusion, work travel doesn't have to be a burden. With the right approach, it can be a time of maximum productivity and enjoyment.
